Ferocactus johnstonianus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Ferocactus johnstonianus grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of more than 1 meter with diameters of 35 centimeters. There are 24 to 31 slightly tuberous ribs . The 22 to 25 slightly outwardly curved, awlish thorns are golden yellow and turn brown with age. They are up to 6 centimeters long and cannot be divided into central and radial spines.

The funnel-shaped, yellow flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters and have a diameter of 3.5 centimeters. The 3 centimeter long fruits sometimes tear open with a basal pore.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus johnstonianus is distributed on the island of Ángel de la Guarda , part of the Mexican state of Baja California . The first description was in 1923 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
