Ferocactus viridescens is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet viridescens means 'becoming green' or 'greenish'. English and Spanish common names are "Coast Barrel Cactus", "Keg Cactus", "Green-Stemmed Viznaga", "San Diego Barrel Cactus", "Sisal".

Ferocactus viridescens usually grows individually and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters with the same diameter. The depressed spherical to cylindrical shoots are deep green. There are 13 to 34 blunt, occasionally tubercular ribs . The yellowish to reddish thorns turn gray with age. The four to nine central spines are crossed and curved, but not hook-shaped and up to 5 centimeters long. Some of the central spines are flattened or twisting. Some of the 8 to 25 radial spines are as strong as the central spines. The rest are bristle-like.

The broad, bell-shaped, yellowish green flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters and have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. The up to 3.5 centimeters long, initially green or red fruits later turn yellow.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus viridescens is distributed in California and in the Mexican state of Baja California .

It was first described as Echinocactus viridescens in 1840 by John Torrey and Asa Gray . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Ferocactus viridescens var. Littoralis G.E. Linds.
  • Ferocactus viridescens var. Viridescens

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
