Novi Pazar Fortress is a medieval Turkish fortress built by Isa-Beg Ishaković , the founder of Sarajevo , Novi Pazar and Šabac , in the 15th century.
history
Ghazi Isa Beg built the fortress in the 15th century at the crossroads of the caravan routes connecting Bosnia , Dubrovnik and the southern Adriatic with Constantinople and Thessaloniki . After the defeat of the Ottomans in the Battle of Kahlenberg and the advance of the Austrian army into Skopje, the Ottoman authorities decided to expand the former manor house. The reconstruction continued until 1750. During the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz , two new towers, a room for storing weapons and ammunition, a small mosque and a barracks were added.
Today the fortress is only partially preserved. After the Balkan Wars , the Serbian army destroyed the mosque inside the fortress. The tower at the north bastion was demolished during the First World War. The entrance gate, log houses, ancillary facilities and an Austrian chapel, the remains of which were preserved during the Second World War until 1960, disappeared without a trace. Part of the stone wall of the Motriljom tower in the north bastion was dismantled and removed on the initiative of the then mayor of Novi Pazar in 1991/1992. On the north wall there is a relatively well-preserved tower known as the Motrilja Tower .
The Novi Pazar Fortress is located in the city center on the right bank of the Raška River in the City Park. In 2013, due to bankruptcy and donations from Bank Intesa, the walls were restored and archaeological excavations were carried out in the fortress.
