Fetteresso Parish Church

The Fetteresso Parish Church is a parish of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Stonehaven in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

It is believed that the Irish saint Ciaran (515-549) built a chapel on today's western outskirts of Stonhaven. The ruins of the medieval St Ciaran's Church may overlie this early Christian structure. The church, consecrated in 1246, served as a parish church for centuries.

Today's Fetteresso Parish Church was built between 1810 and 1812. Scottish architect John Paterson is responsible for the design . In 1876 the lords of Ury House donated the church organ. Two years later the building was redesigned and expanded. A partial revision of the interior was made in 1884. The hall on the west side dates from 1970.

description

The neo-Gothic Fetteresso Parish Church stands off Bath Street in the north of Stonehaven. Its defensive appearance may have been influenced by the architecture of Fetteresso Castle . Its floor plan roughly describes a D, with the curve forming the main facade on the southeast side. In the center, at the foot of the bell tower, is the ogival main portal. Two pointed arch windows along the tower lead to the concluding, cantilevered crenellated reinforcement with pointed corner curls . At the end of the curve, octagonal towers, also crenellated, flank the main tower. The final roof is covered with gray slate.
