Fettmarkt (Warendorf)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fettmarkt is a folk festival that takes place every October in the Westphalian town of Warendorf , with a fair and cattle and flea market .

Origin and history

A certificate of the Prince Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen of Munster to Coesfeld from 3. February 1657 the city of Warendorf is granted the right in temporal proximity to Münster -end fall to hold a two-day cattle market. This cattle market was intended to stimulate the regional economy, which was badly damaged as a result of the Thirty Years War . The market was probably not a pure cattle market from the start. Trade and handicraft goods were also offered for sale on this occasion.

Again and again, however, local merchants and craftsmen with varying degrees of success resisted the fact that non-local suppliers were allowed to sell their goods on the fat market.

About the name

The name " Fettmarkt ", which is common today , has been used since 1824. On the one hand, he alludes to the fact that the local farmers sold their "fat" cattle on the market in autumn in order to use the proceeds to cover their winter needs for clothing and household appliances. On the other hand, the recruiting took place at the same time . In this context, the then Mayor of Warendorf, Schnösenberg, used the name "Fettmarkt" for the first time.

The fat market today

Nowadays, the livestock trade (especially with small livestock ) only makes up a negligibly small proportion of the fat market. In the foreground is a flea market that runs through the entire city center and where private and commercial dealers and second-hand dealers offer all kinds of new and used goods.

Supporting events and a fair take place around the actual market day (always a Wednesday, which is called “Customs Day” in Warendorf and is free of school).

On October 21, 2001, the steep face driver Dieter Minewitsch had a fatal accident during a performance at the Warendorfer Fettmarkt fair.
