Fidel Ángel Castro Díaz-Balart (born September 1, 1949 in Havana ; † February 1, 2018 ibid), called Fidelito (Fidelchen) , was a Cuban nuclear physicist . He was the eldest son of the Cuban revolutionary and politician Fidel Castro and his first wife Mirta Diaz-Balart, the sister of Rafael Diaz-Balart .

Live and act

"Fidelito's" parents were divorced in 1955 before the Cuban Revolution , when Castro took power in the country. His mother Mirta moved to Miami with the Diaz-Balart family and took their son with her. Castro Diaz-Balart returned to Cuba as a child to visit his father and was held there for the remainder of his childhood. He first became known to a wider public in 1959 when he appeared on American television as a 9-year-old during an interview with his father.

Castro Diaz-Balart studied in the Soviet Union under the code name José Raúl Fernández for security reasons , and became a nuclear physicist with two doctoral degrees. In 1980, when he was in his early thirties, he became General Secretary of the Cuban Nuclear Energy Commission. He directed the construction of the Juraguá nuclear power plant ; this should be Cuba's first nuclear power plant. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Cuba suffered a severe economic crisis in 1992 . His father ordered the cessation of work and "Fidelito" was relieved of his offices. Most recently he was a scientific advisor to the Cuban government and vice president of the Academy of Sciences. According to his own statements, he had no political ambitions.

Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart was treated for depression . He died by suicide in 2018 .
