Fidelma O'Kelly Macken (born February 28, 1945 ) is an Irish lawyer and former judge at the European Court of Justice .

After graduating from school in the 1960s, Macken went on a three-year trip around the world, which took her to Australia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, South and Central America, among others. She lived and worked temporarily for a lawyer in San Francisco and Washington, which had a lasting impact on her career choice.

Macken studied at King's Inns and Trinity College in Dublin and was admitted to the bar in Ireland in 1972.

Between 1973 and 1979 she worked for patent and trademark attorneys. She became a barrister in 1979, senior counsel in 1995 and also served on the England and Wales Bar. As a lawyer, she specialized in defending against pharmaceutical and medical liability lawsuits . In a number of cases, she acted as an attorney for a manufacturer of whooping cough vaccines to defend against child claims for damages for alleged vaccine damage .

In 1998 she was appointed a judge on the High Court in Ireland. From October 6, 1999 to October 13, 2004, she was the first woman to hold the post of judge at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg . On her return to Ireland, Fidelma O'Kelly Macken was appointed Supreme Court judge on October 18, 2004.

She is a Lecturer in Legal Systems and Legal Methodology and Averil Deverell Lecturer in Commercial Law at Trinity College Dublin and Bencher (Board Member) of the Honorable Society of King's Inns.
