Universal Studios , which was planning a Hollywood film version of the novel, bought the film exploitation rights to the book for five million US dollars in March 2012 for its Focus Feature studio, which is geared towards smaller productions, the producers (Smash Pictures) of the pornography Adaptation sued. Fifty Shades Ltd. and Universal City Studios LLC was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California on November 27, 2012. The complaint argues that the porn version is not a parody. The author of the bestseller series EL James had joined the lawsuit . An out-of-court settlement was reached.

In Germany, the porn version was published in mid-November 2012 under the title The 50 Faces of Mr. Gray - Dark Desire . The German distributor, Sunfilm Entertainment and Tiberius Film, took the title, which was due to appear on DVD and Blu-ray on November 19, 2012, from its range.

The film was nominated in the category Best Parody (Drama) for the XRCO Awards 2013, but could not win the award.
