Fikri Alican (born April 2, 1930 in Adapazarı ; † August 19, 2015 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish physician and full professor at the Istanbul University .

Alican was born in 1929 to Hakki and Fahriye Alicanin in Adapazarı in northwestern Turkey. He left his place of birth after middle school, attended a high school in Istanbul and then until 1949 Robert College . In 1955 he completed a degree in human medicine at Istanbul Üniversitesi with a doctorate in medicine . He gained his first practical experience at the Clinic for Medical Treatments and Diagnostic Interventions of the University of Istanbul (also Surgical Clinic 4), which Şinasi Hakkı Erel directed. There he met his future wife Halide Ihlamur, who worked as a nurse at the clinic.

After completing his training in general surgery , the young doctor was particularly interested in transplant medicine . He moved to the University of Mississippi on a Fulbright scholarship , whose clinic was one of the leading research institutions in transplant medicine in the 1960s. The first lung was transplanted here in 1963 and the first heart was transplanted into a human body in 1964 by James D. Hardy . Just weeks after arriving in Jacksonville in the summer of 1960, Alican proposed marriage to his future wife, and the couple married in the United States in November 1960. Alican earned a Masters in Physiology from the University of Mississippi in 1962 . He studied with Arthur C. Guyton while serving as a fellow and assistant at the Clinic of Surgery, which Hardy ran.

Alican made significant contributions to transplant medicine research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) during the 1960s and was instrumental in the pioneering work of Hardy. He played an important role in the development of surgical techniques in the fields of physiology, transplant biology and the pathophysiology of shock . Alican he was a surgeon at the university hospital and assistant director of the transplant program. Twenty years later he became a founding member of the James D. Hardy Society, founded in 1991 .

In 1971 Alican went back to Istanbul and was appointed full professor of general surgery at Istanbul Üniversitesi, but practiced privately from 1979, as the legal regulations for medical teaching staff for work outside the university changed during this time.

Alican has published numerous articles and books in English and Turkish. While his articles are predominantly concerned with organ transplantation and physiology, he has also written monographs on general surgery, cancer research, and other diseases. This is also because after his return to Turkey, Alican turned to more general questions about surgery. In his autobiography from 2000 he wrote that this change was mainly due to the scarcity of research resources in Turkey during this time. He noted that this not only slowed the progress of studies but also hindered scientific research because the libraries were so poorly equipped. His solution was to set up his own library with a comprehensive catalog of medical journals, which he financed himself. For more than 30 years, he personally subscribed to 22 specialist magazines, supplemented them with books, and cataloged and inventoried them personally.
