The listed branch church Martinau is dedicated to St. Joseph of Nazareth and is located in Martinau, a fraction of the municipality of Elmen in the Reutte district in Tyrol .

history

Instead of an older small chapel, Martinau wanted to build a larger chapel closer to the houses as early as 1706. However, the request was rejected. The building permit was not granted until 1708, and the new chapel could finally be built. During the fire in March 1903, this chapel and all of its valuable inventory also went down in the flames. It was then rebuilt and in particular equipped with figures that were no longer needed in the Elmen parish church at the time . With the approval to leave the Holy of Holies permanently, the chapel was able to rise to a branch church of the parish of Elmen in 1959.

architecture

The building does not offer any architectural features. The almost square nave with a flat ceiling over a hollow is followed in the east by the retracted choir with a star ridge vault and a 3/8 end. The small sacristy is attached to it, while the tower with its gable-pointed helmet and the chapel entrance dominates the west side of the church.

Furnishing

The current furnishings of the small church are made up of pieces from various artistic periods. On the neo-Romanesque high altar - identical to the side altars from 1866 in the Stanzach parish church - there are figures from the Imst widower's workshop and from the Pfronten baroque sculptor Maximilian Hitzelberger . The lateral sculptures of Joachim and Johannes Baptist can be attributed to the latter. The two entablature angels, on the other hand, come from Joseph Clemens Witwer (around 1795), while his father Joseph Georg Witwer created the figures of the evangelists Matthew and John on the tabernacle around 1774, admittedly not for the little Martinau church either. With the two missing evangelists, they formerly belonged to the pulpit parapet in a larger church.

Joseph Georg Witwer also created the masterful sculptures of hll at the same time as the strikingly cut evangelists. Francis and Anthony of Padua standing on consoles on the choir arch.

At the side high in front of the gallery are two other remarkable figures - the hll. Katharina and Barbara. They could be identified as works by the Hindelang sculptor Johann Richard Eberhard and can even be dated precisely to 1784. The associated Madonna has been restored and is now back in the parish church of Elmen and Martinau.

The high altar sheet - depicted is St. Joseph with the Jesusknaben - was not made until 1904 and was made by Johann Kärle from Vorderhornbach, who also painted the small Stations of the Cross.
