Maurice Britt

Maurice Lee "Footsie" Britt Jr. (born June 29, 1919 in Carlisle , Lonoke County , Arkansas , †  November 26, 1995 in Little Rock , Arkansas) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1971 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Arkansas.

Career

Maurice Britt graduated from Lonoke High School and then studied at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville . He also played as a footballer in the NFL for the Detroit Lions in 1941 . During the Second World War he was a captain in the United States Army . He was deployed in Europe and lost his right arm in combat. For his military achievements he was awarded the Medal of Honor .

After the war, Britt began studying law, but dropped out. In the following decades he worked for a furniture manufacturer. He then headed the Beautyguard Manufacturing Company , which manufactured aluminum products. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1966 he was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas alongside Winthrop Rockefeller . He held this office between 1967 and 1971. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate .

From 1971 to 1985, Maurice Britt was the District Director of the Small Business Administration . In 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Arkansas . He died of heart failure on November 26, 1995 in a Little Rock hospital.
