The Roman Catholic branch church Weitensfeld is consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene . It stands east of Weitensfeld market on the right bank of the Gurk .

history

The church was built in the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1264.

Building

The small Romanesque building from the 12th century with a retracted, rectangular choir has a wooden roof turret. A late Gothic sacristy is built on the south side . The wooden canopy dates from 1680. There are remains of paintings on the outer walls, including a representation of St. Christopher from the 14th century, which was later painted over. On the west wall is a representation of the Madonna made around 1470/1480.

The interior of the nave has a flat, patronized and painted wooden ceiling that was drawn in in the 16th century. The parapet of the gallery is also patronized. The choir behind the late Gothic triumphal arch is single-bayed, its groin vault is painted, including symbols of the evangelists. On the south side of the choir, a corbel portal leads to the sacristy. On the walls of the choir and nave there are remains of frescoes from the first half of the 14th century.

Facility

The baroque high altar with fluted columns is marked with the year 1649. The altarpiece shows St. Magdalena. On the wing paintings on the left are Saint Anne with Mary, on the right Saint Blasius shown. In the blasted gable is an image of Mary with the baby Jesus.

In the shrine of the baroque left side altar (marked 1669) there is a figure of St. Anna with childlike Maria on her left arm, holding a book on the right. In the top picture is St. Nicholas depicted.

In the shrine of the baroque right side altar (marked 1679) stands a figure of St. Blasius, holding a candle as an attribute in his right hand. The top picture shows Maria with child.

The windows were enlarged in the Gothic period, with one exception: a Romanesque window with a wooden frame and the oldest glass painting in Austria remained in the south wall of the nave. The so-called Magdalenenscheibe, which depicts St. Magdalena, was created around 1170. After this window was stolen in 1930, it was soon recovered and has been kept in the Gurk Treasury , the former Klagenfurt Diocesan Museum , ever since . A copy was made for the church.
