Filipa de Perestrelo e Moniz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Filipa de Perestrelo e Moniz (* probably 1452 , † around 1484) was a Portuguese noblewoman. Until her death she was the wife of Christopher Columbus and the mother of the viceroy Diego Columbus .

Life

Filipa's mother, Isabel Moniz, came from impoverished Portuguese high nobility. Her father, Bartolomeu Perestrelo , was the son of a merchant from Italy and until his death (before 1458) governor of the island of Porto Santo of the Madeira group. Filipa met Columbus in 1478 in Madeira, where he had taken a boat trip . His marriage to her in 1479 is considered to be groundbreaking for his later life, as it brought him into contact with a family that was connected to the history of the discovery of Portugal. After the marriage, Columbus spent some time in Porto Santo, where the couple's son, Diego , was born.
