Filipinos in Switzerland
The over 10,000 Filipinos in Switzerland consist of migrants from the Philippines in Switzerland and their descendants.
They mostly speak Filipino and one of the many local languages in the Philippines , sometimes Spanish as their mother tongue, as well as English , the second official language of the Philippines, and increasingly also German , French and Italian .
In the spring of 1975, Switzerland had 188 Filipino citizens living in the country. By 2005, the number of Filipino citizens in Switzerland had multiplied to 3547. From the 1970s to the 1990s, numerous Filipinas came to Switzerland as guest workers , mainly as nurses. In the 1980s, some Filipinas came officially to work as cabaret dancers with a 10 month permit; in reality, many have been forced into prostitution . Migration through marriage was another common route to Switzerland. After 1992, those married to Swiss citizens were no longer automatically granted Swiss citizenship. The trend for many Filipinos to come to Switzerland on a tourist visa and then stay to find work began in the 1990s.
