Filippo Planzone

Filippo Planzone , called Il Siciliano (* 1610 in Nicosia , † 1636 in Genoa ) was an Italian sculptor from Sicily .

Life

At a young age, Planzone came to Genoa, where he served as a soldier. In his spare time he worked as a wood carver. His work caught the attention of the art patron Battista Dalla Torre, who enabled him to attend the local art school.

Planzone developed into one of the leading ivory and coral carvers of his time. His clients were the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando II. De 'Medici , Pope Urban VIII. And numerous private collectors. He died at the age of 26 on a trip to Rome.

In the Museo degli Argenti in the Palazzo Pitti ( Florence ) there is a filigree ivory carving by the artist depicting a horse.
