The Filmkartell "Weltfilm" GmbH was a film company based in Berlin that produced proletarian films .

history

The company was founded in 1928 by the International Workers' Aid and moved into its office at Hedemannstrasse 21 in Berlin-Kreuzberg . Personnel it was closely intertwined with the Prometheus film . The “Weltfilm” was temporarily directed by the founder of Prometheus, Emil Unfried ; the producers were Willi Münzenberg and the writer Léo Lania . “Weltfilm” mainly produced short communist documentary and propaganda films , mostly with Albrecht Viktor Blum or Phil Jutzi as directors. Jutzi also directed the documentary feature film “ Um's Daily Bread ” (1928/29) for “Weltfilm” , a film mainly made with amateur actors about the hardship of workers in the Lower Silesian mining region of Waldenburg. This film, which is considered to be the first important proletarian reportage film in Germany, was financed by the Volks-Film-Verband, whose organizers included Heinrich Mann , Béla Balázs , Käthe Kollwitz , Erwin Piscator and GW Pabst .

In addition to its production work, “Weltfilm” also acted as a non-commercial distributor for productions by Prometheus Film, selected socially critical films from bourgeois production companies and for Soviet feature films and documentaries.
