FindFind.it (previously: Serchilo ) is a collaboratively created meta search engine whose users can use various search services via defined commands. With an optional registration, users can also create personal commands. The commands are under a Creative Commons license (cc-by-sa), the source code is freely available under the Affero GPL .

history

FindFind.it was founded in 2005 under the name Serchilo by Georg Jähnig, named after the Esperanto word for search engine .

The original version used MediaWiki as the basis for managing the commands. In 2007 there was the option of registering as a user and creating your own commands.

From 2007 Serchilo achieved popularity in various media, including Netzpolitik.org and Basic thinking , as well as in the magazine c't and the Austrian Kronen Zeitung . The British technology blog MakeUseOf also reported in an article.

In 2013, the site was redesigned on Drupal , and the integration options were expanded to include Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox Mobile .

In 2015 the source code was published under the Affero GPL , the site was redesigned for mobile use and renamed to the more easily remembered name FindFind.it .

The early versions of the Opera and Mozilla Firefox web browsers already offered the option of controlling different search engines with self-defined keywords . By using FindFind.it as a web service to save these commands online,

  • Setup on different end devices is made easier: It is sufficient to enter the commands only once in order to use them in different environments.
  • Maintenance costs are reduced: if the URL of a web service changes, one user can update it and everyone else benefits.

The use of seldom used commands is also made easier by auto-completion : All commands that match the input are displayed.

In contrast to similar services (such as the goodies at DuckDuckGo ), FindFind.it commands allow calls to be made with more than one argument. B. possible to search for train connections.
