Darkness covers the earth (original title: Ciemności kryją ziemię ) is a novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski . It is a parable on Stalinism and appeared during the brief " thaw period " in 1957. The German translation from Polish by Walter Henke and Oskar Jan Tauschinski was first published in 1962 by Langen Müller Verlag , Munich .

In 1491 the Inquisition raged in Spain . The monk Diego is appalled by the atrocities that are being committed in the name of God. One night he shares his feelings with an elderly monk. He does not know that his interlocutor is the Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada . Instead of having him arrested, Torquemada appoints Diego as his secretary. Over time, Diego transforms from an idealist into a religious fanatic. The Grand Inquisitor, on the other hand, begins to doubt the legality of his actions. On his deathbed, he dictates an edict to Diego ordering the abolition of the Inquisition. But Diego does not write it down. Horrified by his master's change of heart, which also topples Diego's worldview, he attacks the dying man and hits the corpse in the face.

The novel was filmed in 1987 under the Spanish title Torquemada with Francisco Rabal as Torquemada and Jacques Breuer as Diego in an E / GB / D co-production. In Germany the film was entitled covered darkness the earth for the first time in the program of the first on 16 November 1988th
