Fiona Burnett

Fiona Burnett (* 1971 in Sydney ) is an Australian jazz musician ( soprano saxophone , composition ).

Burnett took classical piano lessons as a child; at the age of 13 she switched to the saxophone. She soon started playing jazz and made her first public appearance in 1985. In 1992 she moved to Melbourne to study classical music with Graeme Shilton and Mary Finsterer at the Victorian College of the Arts until 1997 ; she completed her Masters with distinction. Further studies with David Liebman , George Coleman and Joe Lovano followed.

In 1992 Burnett founded the group Morgana with the singer Lisa Young, the pianist Sue Johnson, the bassist Annette Jenko-Yates and the drummer Sonja Horbelt, which performed at numerous festivals in Australia. The band's two albums, Talk Walk Whisper and Have You Heard the News Today? were nominated as best jazz album by ARIA. Burnett also performed with the British Grand Union Orchestra . In 1997 she founded her quartet, the albums of which have received international critical acclaim. With her trio and the Silo String Quartet , she performed her suite Soaring at Dawn at the Melbourne Women's Jazz Festival in 1999 . Further performances followed in the next few years (album 2003). She also composed for a classical chamber orchestra.

In 2000 she toured Germany with Carola Gray's band . She can also be heard on albums by Endorphin and Andy Page.
