Rudolf Firkušný
Rudolf Firkušný (born February 11, 1912 in Napajedla , Moravia , † July 19, 1994 in Staatsburg , New York ) was a Czech pianist .
Firkušný was a pupil of Leoš Janáček at the age of five and performed in Prague at the age of eight, and at the age of ten he played Mozart's Coronation Concerto with the Prague Philharmonic .
In 1931 he met Bohuslav Martinů for the first time . His friendship with this musician continued after he left his homeland in 1939 after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. He lived for many years in France ( Paris , Aix-en-Provence , Marseille ) and in the USA . In 1948 he left Czechoslovakia again and moved to the USA. In 1971 he lived in Lucerne and taught Viera Janárčeková .
Rudolf Firkušný is considered a prominent Janáček interpreter, whose complete works for piano he recorded several times. He was also awarded the Grammy Award for the recording of Bohuslav Martinů's piano works .
