First Light , also called 1st Light , was a British music project consisting of Paul Hardcastle and Derek Green. Stylistically, the formation moved in the areas of electro , soul , funk and disco .

Band history

The two protagonists knew each other through their membership in the disco-funk band Direct Drive , whose singles Don't Depend on Me and Time's Running Out (both 1982) included Hardcastle as keyboard player and Green as singer . Then they left the group to start their joint project First Light.

The first first light single, A Horse with No Name / Do Not Be Mistaken , was released in May 1982 and, like the single 16 Minutes of 1st Light that followed in the same year , failed to make it into the charts. It was only with Explain the Reasons (18 Minutes of First Light) that it entered the UK charts at number 65 in May of the following year . All of the songs that have appeared on singles so far can also be found on the debut album 1st Light , which was released in 1983. With the fourth and, for the time being, last single, the duo managed another chart entry in the United Kingdom at the beginning of 1984, this time at number 71. The title is on the best-of album Daybreak , released in the same year .

In 1988 Hardcastle reactivated First Light, but now without Green. He took over the songwriting and production himself, and Kevin Henry joined as the new singer. In 1989 and 1990 a total of four singles were released: Loving You , You Had It All , Right or Wrong and So Easy . These songs can also be heard on the 1989 album You Had It All . After a 20-year hiatus, Hardcastle produced the jazz album East to West , which was released in August 2010 as the third first light studio album.
