Fish market square (Rapperswil)
The Fischmarktplatz is a public square in the old town of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .
Location and geography
The fish market square is located at the southern end of the old town of Rapperswil and forms its end to the port on Lake Zurich . Located to the south of the main square and connected to it by Fischmarktstrasse, it is a generously designed, almost square square with a public fountain in front of the former Heiliggeistspital.
history
The open fish market square and the lakeside inns Schwanen, Steinbock, Schwert, Bellevue, Anker and Du Lac were created with the rise of tourism after 1834. The medieval fortified inner harbor , which was razed together with most of the city fortifications, was located on the site of today's fish market place until 1837 . Until the railway and today's road bridge over the Seedamm was put into operation , the main traffic connection in the region, the wooden bridge over the Obersee , led to the former southern bridge gate near Heilig Hüsli . The traffic through the city of Rapperswil ran from the eastern Halstor at Engelplatz across the main square through Fischmarktstrasse to the fortified gate at the Fischmarkt, where today's Hecht and Hirschen inns are located. Until 1834, fortification walls protected the inner harbor, which was located in the area of today's parking garage and in turn blocked the ship's approach through the wooden portcullis in the protective gate tower, which was expanded in 1610. The razing of the city walls and gates was followed by the filling of the inner harbor and the creation of the new outer harbor with its two distinctive breakwaters. Up until that point in time, Lake Zurich reached as far as the city walls, which stretched across the main square and the fish market square on today's house front with the hotels and restaurants to the fortifications at the Capuchin monastery .
Sights and events
The north-eastern axis of the Fischmarktplatz has been shaped by the classicist hospital building by Felix Wilhelm Kubly since 1844, today's Citizens Hospital for the elderly and nursing home instead of the medieval Heilig-Geist-Spital, with the bowl fountain made of Solothurn Jura stone in 1842. The fountain built in 2006 at the transition to the See-Quai is very popular in summer as an improvised playground. In a westerly direction, the See-Quai leads along the harbor and the lakeside hotels and restaurants along the promenade to the landing stage of the Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG), past the Curti-Haus to Bühler-Allee . The Bühler-Allee , begun in 1886, connects the southern part of the old town - past the Endingerhorn and the Lindenhof around the entire peninsula to the influence of the city stream near the Giessi - with the northern part of the old town at Engelplatz.
A large part of the numerous cultural events in Rapperswil take place on the fish market square and the adjacent main square. See also sights in the old town
Fish market fountain
The late medieval fountain originally stood to the east of the hospital building, in Fischmarktgasse opposite today's castle cinema, in the center of the square at that time. The stonemason Jakob Willi was commissioned to redesign the building in 1691. When the inner harbor was filled and the Heiliggeistspital was rebuilt, the baroque fountain was moved to its current location. The current fountain was completed in 1845, a little larger than the one on Engelplatz, but otherwise worked in the same way down to the last detail. At the previous location, an oval basin with a Tuscan well pillar was set in 1845, which has a sink on Fischmarktstrasse and towards today's retirement home.
traffic
The square is part of the pedestrian zone in the city center and is close to the train station with access to the Zurich S-Bahn and the bus network of the Zürichsee and Oberland transport companies, as well as the ZSG and the Hensa shipping company on the Obersee. The underground car park on Seedammstrasse is accessible from the tourist office building.
