Fischweier , formerly also Fischweiher , is a small settlement at the confluence of the Moosalb into the Alb in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg , where the districts of the city of Ettlingen and the communities of Karlsbad and Marxzell meet.

Location and administrative structure

The western, larger part lies in the Burbach district of the Marxzell community. The hamlet has a few houses and a sawmill . To the north of this are the ruins of the former Fischweier open-air swimming pool in the Ettlingen district.

The eastern part belongs to the Spielberg district of the municipality of Karlsbad. It consists only of a former hotel and the buildings of the former Spielberg-Schöllbronn train station, which is now the Fischweier stop on the Alb Valley Railway . This part is also known as the Hotel Fischweier .

history

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Alb valley was a secluded area at the site of today's Fischweier. The abbess of the Frauenalb monastery wanted to use the abundance of forests and in 1705 approached the administration of the Margrave of Baden-Baden with the request to found a glassworks , which was built within a year opposite the confluence of the Moosalb into the Alb. In 1707, the facility consisted of the plant directly to the right of the Alb and a living area a little higher on the slope. As early as 1716, the usable forest near the glassworks was "cleared" and around 1717 the business was relocated to the site of today's Gertrudenhof . What happened to the old buildings is not known.

In the topographical map from 1847 no place name is recorded, but a structure can be seen at the location of today's S-Bahn stop, which suggests a small cleared area with a hut. No further buildings or a pond can be found.

In 1898 the Ettlingen – Herrenalb railway line was opened. Shortly afterwards, a spa hotel was built near the Spielberg-Schöllbronn train station and, in the mid-1930s, a small outdoor swimming pool north of the Moosalb, which was in operation until around 1960. The place name is probably derived from the first hotel name Luftkurhotel “Fischweiher” . The date 1898 is also given as the first written mention of the name Fischweiher . The hotel now serves as accommodation for asylum seekers.
