Architecture and history

A staircase leading up to the point existed from the end of the 19th century. A first eatery opened at this point in 1903 and was built by the shoemaker Knut Gregorius Lied (1857–1937). Fjellstua is Ålesund's oldest restaurant, although the original building has not been preserved. The original structure was made of wood and was painted red with white elements. It was sold to Godtemplarungdomslaget Symra in 1916 . In 1934 the house burned down and was rebuilt from concrete in a new form based on a design by Jens Braaten . Further modifications followed. The house got what it looks like today when it was renovated in 1985, when a glass and aluminum dome was added. The owner was Brødr. Jangaard . In 1994 the viewpoint had 183,800 visitors, making it the fourth most popular viewpoint in Norway.

From August 15, 2014 to May 15, 2015, the stairs leading up from Ålesund had to be renovated after the storm Dagmar and falling trees had caused damage.
