The city park Alesund is the city park of the Norwegian city of Alesund in the province of Møre og Romsdal .
location
It is located east of downtown Ålesund at the foot of Mount Aksla on the island of Nørvøya, which rises steeply to the east above the park . A staircase with 418 steps leads from the city park to the summit of the Akslas and the Fjellstua viewpoint located there .
Design and history
The city park was laid out in 1885 and served as a recreational area for the people of Ålesund. The design was based on English landscape gardens. Several small hills with curved park paths are striking for the city park. There are also two small ponds. From 1921 to 1923 the part of the park facing the street was created. In 2010 the park was rejuvenated.
In addition to native plants, there is a Chilean araucaria that is believed to have been brought from South America by Norwegian sailors in the early 20th century .
There are several monuments and works of art in the park. The Rollo monument, reminiscent of the Viking Rollo , stands in the center of a hill . The Kaiser Wilhelm II monument was erected on the northern edge of the city park . A marker in the park shows the border between Ålesund and Borgund between 1824 and 1875 . In addition , the sculpture Gener by Per Inge Bjørlo is located in the city park . At the edge of the park there is a building stone with the inscription 1885 on a hill .
