Fyodor Kuznetsov ( Russian Фёдор Исидорович Кузнецов * 17 . Jul / 29. September  1898 greg. In Balbetschino , Mogilev Governorate ; † 22. March 1961 in Moscow ) was a Soviet colonel general .

Life

As the son of a farmer, he attended a military school of the Russian army in 1916 . From 1916 to 1918 he commanded a platoon in the army. In the 5th Infantry Division he served on the Western Front as a staff officer. He then worked in the area around Balbetschino as secretary of the Soviets in 1918, where he commanded the Red Guard .

From 1918 to 1921 he fought in the civil war against the whites as a battalion and regimental commander on various fronts. In 1926 he graduated from the military academy "MW Frunze" . From 1926 to 1930 he was used as regimental commander. From 1930 to 1932 he worked at the Rotbanner Infantry School in Moscow in the area of ​​the training department. He then became the commander of this infantry school from 1932 to 1935. From 1935 to 1938 he taught at the Frunze Academy as chief of tactics. Then he commanded a cavalry division.

In 1938 he became a member of the Communist Party. From July 1938 to 1940 he was deputy commander of the Belarusian Special Military District and took part in the winter war against Finland. On June 4, 1940 his rank was raised to lieutenant general , after which he commanded the North Caucasian and then the Baltic Special Military District until the beginning of 1941 . He was promoted to Colonel General on February 22, 1941, and after the beginning of the German-Soviet War in June 1941 he took command of the Northwest Front formed from it . After the defeat in the Battle of the Baltic States against the advancing German Army Group North , he was relieved of his post in early July. He then temporarily commanded the 21st Army and the newly formed Central Front during the Battle of Smolensk . From August he briefly led the 51st Independent Army formed to defend the Crimea and from mid-November to mid-December 1941 the 61st Army at the Battle of Moscow .

He was also Deputy Commander of the Western Front from 1941 to 1942. This was followed by a command at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KJ Voroshilov" from 1942 to 1943. From August 1943 to February 1944 he was Deputy Commander of the Volkhov Front , then until August 1944 of the Karelian Front . He then served in the Urals Military District , which he commanded from February 1945 to February 1948, when he was released into the reserve.

His grave is in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery .
