Fladda is the southernmost and largest island of the Ramna Stacks , a group of uninhabited islands in the north-west of the Shetlands that make up Scotland . It is located about 500 meters northwest of Gruney and two kilometers north of the Point of Fethaland in the North Atlantic . Its dimensions are around 150 meters in a north-south and 50 meters in an east-west direction. A striking feature is a rock gate that runs beneath the island. Only one of the Ramna Stacks Fladda has a significant vegetation, mainly of grasses and based on peat - soil . The other islands in the group are essentially made of bare rock.

Fladda, like Gruney and the rest of the Ramna Stacks, serves as an important breeding ground for various species of seabirds . The island is located within Ramna Stacks and Gruney , a nature reserve ( SSSI ) that is also designated as a protected area under the EU Birds Directive (SPA). Both also fall under the SSSI Uyea - North Roe Coast .
