The official flag of Östergötland ( Swedish : Östergötlands flagga ) is a coat of arms banner with the coat of arms of the Swedish province of Östergötland as a motif.

There is a golden dragon with wings and tail, blue tongue and claws on a red background. Each corner is filled with a silver rose. The coat of arms was introduced on January 18, 1884 on the basis of two earlier coats of arms and revised in 1972.

Unofficial flag

There is also an unofficial version of the Östergötland flag. It is a Scandinavian cross flag , as it is mainly found in the Nordic countries , and corresponds to the flag of Sweden with the reverse color: blue cross on a yellow background. The blue cross symbolizes the two canals Göta Canal and Kinda Canal , both of which lead through the historic province of Östergötland . The yellow basic color stands for the Östergötland plain and its fertile cornfields.

The flag was designed by the publisher Per Andersson from Mjölby and presented to the public in 1972. At the beginning of the eighties they began to be used for tourism purposes on the initiative of some municipalities in Östergötland called "Vätterlandet". However, the awareness of the flag is still limited, even among the Östergötlanders many do not know it.

The design of the flag is not new. Already the government (Landskapsstyrelsen) of the Finnish autonomous province and archipelago of Åland proposed a yellow-blue cross flag as the flag of the archipelago, which was later called "Pestflagge" (plague flag ) . The parliamentarians from the Åland Islands' Landstinget rejected the proposal because they did not like the design.
