Officially accepted: 5th November 1996

The flag of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was introduced on November 5, 1996 and was officially in use until June 14, 2007.

description

The flag consisted of the three vertical stripes in red, white and green. Red represents the Croatian and green the Bosniak population.

In the wider white stripe there is a coat of arms shield with a Bosniak (golden lily on a green background), a Croatian (red and white checkerboard pattern) and a European shield (ten white stars on a blue background).

backgrounds

The federation is part of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina , and carried its own flag, while the other part, Republika Srpska, uses the flag of Serbia with different proportions.

The flag was officially introduced on November 5, 1996. However, the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ruled in a decision of March 31, 2006 that the flag is unconstitutional - the (exclusive) representation of the Bosnian and Croatian coats of arms discriminates against Serbs and other residents of the Federation on national / ethnic grounds.

Since June 14, 2007 the flag, like the coat of arms of the Federation, has been abolished. Since then, the Federation has had neither one nor the other.

Suggestions for a new flag

A commission made up of members of both chambers of the federal parliament, chaired by Ismet Osmanović , has now selected three for a new coat of arms and three for a new flag from 118 proposals and presented them in March 2008. Of the 118 proposals, 93 met the condition that they represent all three peoples of the country.

Suggestions for a new flag:

  1. A tricolor with three equally sized vertical stripes in red, green and medium blue. In the center of the green stripe the new coat of arms: The twelve stars of Europe in a circle, with the coat of arms being divided diagonally from top left to bottom right, the lower left part shows yellow stars on a blue background, the right, upper part shows blue stars on a yellow background .
  2. A tricolor of three horizontal stripes red-green-blue. The red and green stripes are separated by a thin white straight line, the red and blue by a thin white wavy line.
  3. A tricolor of three horizontal stripes red-green-blue. The strips are separated from each other by thin, straight white lines. The top right corner of the flag (flight part) is yellow with three white, five-pointed stars.

The similarity of the last two proposals to the flag of Gambia is striking .
