The Flandria was a cargo steamer from Sweden . It belonged to the shipping company Götha, Förnyade Angfartygs Aktiebolag in Gothenburg . The ship was built in 1898 in Denmark in the yard of Elsinore Jernskibs & Maskinbyggeri Aktieselskab in Elsinore .

Sinking

The Flandria sank on January 18, 1940 at 11.53 p.m. within 20 seconds of a torpedo hit by U 9 ( Oberleutnant zur See Wolfgang Lüth ) in the North Sea at position 54 ° 0 ′  N , 3 ° 40 ′  E in naval grid square AN 6758. 17 People were killed in the sinking, four survived.

The ship had loaded general cargo and paper and was on its way to Amsterdam .
