The spot mite is strikingly red in color. Its body is marked with spots of chitin, the eponymous feature of the species. The eyes are very far apart. The palps are quite long and form a small pair of scissors at the end. The leg links have strong thorns.
The spotted mite lives mainly in springs , moss cushions and mud and is particularly numerous in autumn and winter.
