Bat (heraldic animal)

Bat in the coat of arms of Valencia

The heraldic animal bat is more widespread in the heraldry of Eastern Spanish coats of arms than in the rest of Europe.

As a common figure , it replaces the dragon in Aragonese heraldry and is already known on coats of arms in the Middle Ages around 1200. The bat can be found in the coats of arms of Valencia , Teruel , Albacete , Palma and Fraga .

Their representation is predominantly in black with spreading flight membranes , whereby the stylization is limited to the silhouette. In the coat of arms of Montchauvet (Yvelines) in France it is in gold and in the coat of arms of Fiefbergen in Schleswig-Holstein in silver. The position is generally facing the viewer. The animal can be found in coats of arms and also above the coat of arms. In the Spanish coats of arms it sits on top or hovers over, sometimes under, the coat of arms crown . In the older coat of arms of Barcelona a bat was floating in the upper coat of arms , but has been removed for unknown reasons.

The bat can also be found as a symbol. Example of the coat of arms-like symbol of Albacete Balompié , a Spanish football club. Here the heraldic animal forms the edition for the club symbol.
