Dortmund-Brackel Air Base
The Dortmund-Brackel Air Base , together with the Richthofen barracks, was a military facility of the Wehrmacht Air Force in Dortmund-Brackel . It was on the grounds of the civil airport Dortmund-Brackel .
history
The Brackeler Feld was used for sport aviation as early as 1914, before civil scheduled air traffic began in May 1925. After the National Socialists came to power, which resulted in the still secret establishment of an air force, the I./JG 134 (I. Group of Jagdgeschwader 134) was located here from April 1934 . This group, which was among the first of the newly to be set up Air Force, flew here initially with the Arado Ar 65 and the Ar Arado 68E and later with the Bf 109B / D . Until August 1939, there was still a parallel operation between civil and military use. After that there was no more civil flight. For use as an air base, one very large, one large and eight medium-sized hangars were built south of the airfield. Accommodation and utility buildings were located behind the hangars.
The following table shows a list of selected active flying units (excluding school and supplementary units) of the Air Force that were stationed here between 1934 and 1945.
