Flinter Groep BV is a shipping company in Barendrecht . It is one of the five largest shipping companies in the Netherlands .
history
The company was founded in 1989 by Bert Otto and Jan van Niejenhuis in Paterswolde near Groningen . Otto previously worked in the insurance industry in Groningen, while Van Niejenhuis had previously managed the Delfzijler shipping company Wagenborg . The first ship was the Flinterborg , a coaster with a deadweight of about 3000 tons. By the year 2000 the fleet had grown to nine ships and Flinter took over the Rotterdam-based charter company Ancora Shipping, which has also been operating under the name Flinter since 2006. In September 2006 the headquarters were moved from Paterswolde to Barendrecht.
Today around 40 multi-purpose dry freighters with load capacities of up to 11,000 tons are managed . Flinter's activities include nautical and technical management, crewing and financing of the ships. As a further mainstay, Flinter works as a broker in ship sales. The shipping company has offices in Istanbul, Gdynia, Antwerp and Vaasa.
On October 14, 2016, Flinter announced its insolvency after the ING-Bank ended further financing of nine Flinter ships.
