Flinthorn
The Flinthörn is an area in the southwest of the East Frisian island of Langeoog , whose name is derived from the two terms Flint ( flint ) and Hörn (flood hook). Since 1986, the Flinthörn heard as a quiet zone (zone I) to the National Park Wadden Sea . Previously, the area had been designated as the “Flinthörn Nature Reserve” from 1963 due to its outstanding nature conservation importance.
The distinctive salt marsh and dune area developed over time from an independent, accumulating sand plate . According to historical reports, the development of the Flinthörns began when parts of the island village on the neighboring island of Baltrum were destroyed after a storm surge in February 1825 . The debris was driven in the area of the Langeooger Flinthörn and formed obstacles for the drifting sand, which led to the deposition of sand. This is how the dune formation of the first Flinthörndüne began. Benefiting from the Flinthörndeich, which was built between 1937 and 1944, the dike foreland developed undisturbed from the sandplate through the various stages of dune development to the older gray dunes . All stages of dune formation can still be observed today. In addition, the Flinthörn is an important breeding, resting and guest bird area for waders and water birds.
Since it was first placed under protection in 1963, the Flinthörn can no longer be entered all year round. The Flinthörn nature trail is an exception . Starting from the 7.40 meter high Flinthörndeich, the nature trail leads over 1.5 kilometers to an observation and information platform on the edge of the dune and on to the Flinthörnstrand. The start and end of the nature trail are marked by steles . Illustrated information boards explain the habitats with their bird and plant species. The establishment of the nature trail was a joint project of the island community of Langeoog, the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation and the National Park Administration. The information boards were financed by donations from Langeoog citizens and institutions.
