Florbela de Alma da Conceiçao Espanca (born December 8, 1894 in Vila Viçosa , † December 8, 1930 in Matosinhos ) was a Portuguese poet .

Life

Florbela Espanca was born in Vila Viçosa ( Alentejo region ) in 1894 under simple circumstances. She was an illegitimate child. In 1917 she graduated from high school and in 1919 she was divorced from her first husband. She then went to Lisbon to study law . In 1919 her first book, the book of poetry Livro de Magoas (Book of Sorrows), appeared, but it was unsuccessful. In the same year, the second marriage broke up. She later entered into a third marriage. Her brother Apeles, who died in 1927 and whom she loved dearly, was of great importance in her life and work.

Florbela Espanca died by suicide on December 8, 1930 .

Her work is characterized by melancholy and grief , melancholy and disgust and weariness. She can also be called the "female pessoa ". She wrote all her life. There was something pathologically healing about writing about her. It was her latent melancholy that drove her to death.
