Florenc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florenc is a place in Prague ( Czech Republic ), on the border between New Town and Karlín , not far from the Vltava . Since it is not an administrative district or an official district, the boundaries are not precisely defined.

Name and origin

The place name can be documented until the 15th century. Presumably it goes back to the fact that Florentine workers settled here who were needed under Charles IV for the construction of the New Town of Prague from 1348 onwards. Na Florenci Street was named after them, and the neighborhood was named after them.

Another story

During the industrial revolution , when the first factories were built in Karlín, workers from the New Town and Old Town drove to work via Florenc. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first tram in Prague started operating in Pankrác . The railway was also of great importance for the district - from 1845 until the end of the 20th century, Florenc was connected to the railway network via the north-west station, while other railway lines led via the Negrelliviaduct to northern Bohemia. In 1974 Florenc was connected to the metro . In 1976 the North-South City Motorway (Severojižní magistrála) including a bridge over the city district went into operation. During the flood of the century in 2002 , the entire district including the subway was flooded.

The central Prague bus station Florenc
