Florence Eliza Allen
Florence Eliza Allen (born October 4, 1876 in Horicon (Wisconsin) , † December 31, 1960 in Madison (Wisconsin) ) was an American mathematician , university teacher and suffragette. In 1907 she was the second woman to receive her PhD in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin .
life and work
Allen studied mathematics at the University of Wisconsin's College of Letters and Science and received her bachelor's degree in 1900 . In 1901 she obtained her master’s degree and did her doctorate in 1907 with Linnaeus Wayland Dowling with the dissertation: The Cyclic Involutions of Third Order Determined by Nets of Curves of Deficiency 0, 1, and 2. She became an assistant in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin in 1901 and became 1945 assistant professor. As a student she became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and as a doctoral student a member of the female student union Delta Delta Delta . She was president of a society for fine arts and literature for women.
