Florence-Ludwig Heidsieck (born November 23, 1749 in Borgholzhausen in the Gütersloh district , † October 17, 1828 in Reims ) was the founder of all later champagne houses of this name.

Life

Heidsieck was born as the son of the Protestant pastor Friedrich Heinrich Heidsieck and his wife Dorothee Elisabeth Thorbecke, both of whom come from Brockhagen . His family originally came from Schleswig-Holstein. At the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship in Lübeck , but at the age of 28 he settled in Reims (France) in 1777 , where he took French citizenship. From then on he called himself Florens-Louis Heidsieck. Shortly thereafter, he married the daughter of the wealthy textile entrepreneur Nicolas Perthois and founded a company with his son in 1785 that initially dealt with the textile trade.

He had already started to produce his own wine in 1780 and was so successful at it that he opened his own champagne house on July 16, 1785. When he dedicated one of his champagnes to the then Queen Marie Antoinette , he was allowed to personally present this champagne to the Queen. In 1794 the company name was changed to Heidsieck & Co. Since his young son died unexpectedly early, he gradually brought his four nephews, who were still living in Germany, to his company in Reims.

Henri-Louis Walbaum was the first to join the company in 1795. He was followed in 1800 by Frédéric-Auguste Delius, in 1805 by Charles-Henri Heidsieck and in 1808 by Christian Heidsieck, the younger brother of Charles-Henri. He made one of his nephews, Christian Heidsieck, a partner. When Florens-Louis Heidsieck died in 1828 at the age of 79, Christian Heidsieck took over the champagne house and made his cousin, Henri Guillaume Piper, a partner.

The roots of the champagne houses come from this early days, because the nephews and great-nephews went their separate ways. As early as 1834, Henry-Louis Walbaum founded his own champagne company under the name Walbaum & Heidsieck and sold the Monopole , which later supplemented the company name. The other two branches of the company are created under the names Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck . Heidsieck Monopole is completely taken over by GH Mumm in 1985 . The numerous legal disputes are buried today, as the champagne houses are now affiliated with other large corporations.

2,800 bottles of Goût Américan, Vintage 1907 champagne intended for the Russian Tsar Nicholas II sank on November 3, 1916 on the transport ship Jönköping , which was sunk by a German submarine and was 64 meters below the surface until 1997. After the recovery, the undamaged champagne turned out to be still drinkable, as the "storage" was almost optimal (high water pressure at 4 ° C). A large part of the champagne was auctioned and fetched up to € 3,000 per bottle.
