GH Mumm is the name of a champagne producer in Reims . The Société GH Mumm et Cie belongs to the Pernod Ricard group of companies . The GH Mumm brand , or Mumm for short , is known as the “shaking champagne” at every Formula 1 award ceremony (until 2017) as well as the World Rally Championship .

history

The Mumm house was founded in 1827 by the three German brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm and Friedrich Giesler from Brühl . They named it after her father, the banker and wine merchant Peter Arnold Mumm , who from Solingen came and produced wine in Cologne since 1761 and selling, PA Mumm & Co . Gottlieb Mumm had made big profits with the so-called " comet vintage " of Johannisberg Castle through wine speculation and then founded a winery in Johannisberg that was later called GH von Mumm .

After Gottlieb Mumm's death in 1852, the two companies GH Mumm & Co. (after Gottlieb Mumm's son Georg Hermann) and Jules Mumm & Co. (after Jacobus Mumm's son Julius Engelbert) were split up . Jules Mumm used in his company the fame of the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor as a recognition symbol for the Mumm brand; the “Cordon Rouge” brand was born. The French polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot carried bottles of this brand with him on his second Antarctic expedition (1903–1905). In gratitude, Charcot named the Mumm Islands off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula after the company. In 1910, GH Mumm & Co. acquired the rights to the Jules Mumm brand .

At the beginning of the First World War , the part of the Mumm family living in Reims, who had never taken French citizenship, was expropriated and returned to Germany. In 1920 the Société GH Mumm was re-established in Reims. Two years later, the Mumm & Co. sparkling wine house was founded in Frankfurt am Main by Godefroy H. Mumm, which since 1933 has been called GH von Mumm & Co. Sektkellerei as a distinction from the French company . During the German occupation of France in World War II , the Mumm family briefly took over the management of GH Mumm, which was immediately canceled after the liberation.

In 1970 the Canadian beverage company Seagram took over both the German sparkling wine house and the champagne company in Reims. In 2001 Seagram sold the spirits division including the champagne brand GH Mumm to Pernod Ricard . The Sekthaus Mumm with the brands Mumm , Jules Mumm and MM Extra was taken over by Rotkäppchen on January 16, 2002 and the name Mumm was incorporated into the new company name Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien .
