history

The three German brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm founded the PA Mumm champagne winery in Reims, France, in 1827 , named after their father Peter Arnold Mumm . The banker and wine merchant Peter Arnold Mumm, who came from Solingen , initially conducted his business from Cologne and, after his marriage, also from Frankfurt am Main. He had made great profits by speculating on wine with the so-called " comet vintage " of Johannisberg Castle .

After Gottlieb Mumm's death in 1852, disagreements led to the split into the two companies GH Mumm & Co. (after Gottlieb Mumm's son Georg Hermann) and Jules Mumm & Co. (after Jacobus Mumm's son Julius Engelbert). Jules Mumm used the prominence of the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor as a recognition symbol for his Mumm brand; the “Cordon Rouge” brand was born. 1910, after the dissolution of the company Jules Mumm & Co., Peter Arnold Mumm Maximilian acquired (called "Georges de Mumm") for GH Mumm & Co. the rights of the brand Jules Mumm .

At the beginning of the First World War , the part of the Mumm family living in Reims, who had never taken French citizenship, was expropriated and returned to Germany. In 1920 the Société GH Mumm was re-established in Reims. Two years later, the Mumm & Co. sparkling wine house was founded in Frankfurt am Main by Godefroy H. Mumm, which since 1933 has been called GH von Mumm & Co. Sektkellerei as a distinction from the French company . During the German occupation of France in World War II , the Mumm family briefly took over the management of GH Mumm, which was immediately canceled after the liberation.

In 1970, the champagne house was GH Mumm & Co. of the namesake winery GH Mumm separated in Johannisberg and went - as well as the champagne house GH Mumm in Reims - to the Canadian Seagram Corporation. The sparkling wine house including the Matheus Müller sparkling wine cellars in Eltville am Rhein (MM Extra) was sold on to the Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellars on January 16, 2002 .
