The 1992 Floresquake was an earthquake near the Indonesian island of Flores on December 12, 1992 . Around 1500 of the more than 2000 people killed in the earthquake can be attributed to the tsunami that followed . On Flores there were also landslides and crevices opened.

Happening

The quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and occurred at 1:29 p.m. local time, just off the north coast of Flores. The total death toll and missing persons after the quake is estimated at 2,500. 500 people were seriously injured and around 90,000 were left homeless. A total of 28,118 homes, 785 schools, 307 mosques and 493 shops and office buildings were destroyed.

On Flores, the tidal wave penetrated up to 300 m inland. Here the tsunami reached a height of 25 m. It reached its maximum in Riangkroko , in the northeast of Flores, with 26.2 m. 163 people were killed in the small village. In the city of Maumere , where 90% of the buildings were destroyed, 1,490 people died. About half of them died in the tsunami.

Around 700 people were killed in the tsunami on Babi Island . Since all houses on the island were destroyed, the entire population had to be evacuated to the neighboring islands by the Indonesian Navy.

Even on the island of Kalaotoa , part of the Salajar Islands , far to the north, 19 people died and 130 houses were destroyed. There was also damage on Sumba and Alor . The shock waves were also felt in Ujung Pandang in Sulawesi and in Kupang in Timor .

On the island of Sukun , the tsunami spilled over the hills into the Samparong Lake , in the east of the island, and caused the level to rise by 20 m.
