from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florian Goebel (* October 18, 1972 in Cologne ; † September 10, 2008 on La Palma ) was a German astrophysicist .

Goebel received his doctorate in 2001 in Hamburg on Measurement of the diffractive contribution to the DIS cross section using the ZEUS forward plug calorimeter . He then worked at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and was a member of DESY . Until his death he led the MAGIC II telescope project. He died at the age of 35 when he fell from a height of about ten meters while working on the telescope's camera. His death led to the cancellation of the inauguration ceremony of the MAGIC II telescope, which had been scheduled nine days after his death.

The two telescopes MAGIC I and MAGIC II of the MAGIC telescope project are dedicated to him, as a memorial plaque unveiled at the inauguration of the telescopes in April 2009 commemorates.
