Floyd Roland

Floyd Roland (born November 23, 1961 in Inuvik ) is a Canadian politician and mechanic . He was Prime Minister of the Northwest Territories from October 17, 2007 to October 26, 2011 .

After finishing school, Roland trained as an auto mechanic at technical colleges in Calgary and Edmonton and practiced this profession in the Northwest Territories. At the beginning of the 1990s he was elected to the city council of Inuvik and was vice mayor of this municipality in 1994/95. He was also chairman of the Inuvik hunters and trappers committee , president of the tourism authority and coach of a local ice hockey team.

In October 1995 Roland was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories . From 1999 he was President of the Parliamentary Commission for Economic Development. As of 2003, he was vice-premier responsible for the areas of finance, health, social assistance, public buildings, personnel and infrastructure. On October 17, 2007, the other members of parliament elected him as the new prime minister (there are no parties in the Northwest Territories, only independent politicians).
