List of Prime Ministers of the Northwest Territories
This list outlines the Prime Minister (Engl. Premier ) of the Northwest Territories in Canada on. Prime ministers have only officially existed since 1995, before government power was exercised by officials with changing names. In the Northwest Territories, the principle of consensus democracy applies , there are no parties. The Prime Minister is elected from among all MPs in the Legislative Assembly.
From 1869 to 1876, the area was the lieutenant governor (lieutenant governor) of the province of Manitoba managed until 1888 by its own lieutenant governor. From 1888 to 1891 the Chairman of the Lieutenant Governor's Advisory Council was chairman of the government, until 1897 the chairman of the Executive Committee (Chairman of the Executive Committee) . From 1897 to 1905 there was for the first time a prime minister for the entire Northwest Territories, which at that time also included the present-day provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan .
From 1905 the Governing Commissioner was (Governing Commissioner) at the head of the government, combined the functions of a Prime Minister and a Deputy Governor. From 1980 to 1994 the head of government held the title of Government Leader , but his powers corresponded to those of Prime Minister.
