List of Prime Ministers of Newfoundland and Labrador
This list outlines the Prime Minister (Engl. Premier ) of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador on. Newfoundland and Labrador has a unicameral parliament with a parliamentary government based on the Westminster system . The Prime Minister is also the chairman of the party that holds the most seats in the House of Assembly . The Prime Minister acts as head of government , while the head of state , the Canadian monarch , by a Deputy Governor (lieutenant governor) is represented. In addition, the Prime Minister puts together and presides over the government called the Executive Council from among the elected MPs.
Before joining the Canadian Confederation in 1949, Newfoundland and Labrador was a British crown colony until 1907 , then an independent Dominion (see Newfoundland (Dominion) ). Government was exercised by an unelected government commission in 1934, after the economic collapse.
