The Desierto de Atacama Airport , also Copiapó Airport , in Spanish Aeropuerto Desierto de Atacama , which means something like Atacama Desert Airport , ( IATA : CPO ; ICAO : SCAT ) is a very important regional airport in the Atacama region in Chile . It is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Copiapó on the Panamericana and near the city of Caldera . It is the only commercial airport within a radius of more than 120 kilometers. The airport is used exclusively for civil purposes and currently only handles domestic flights.

The Aeropuerto Desierto de Atacama was inaugurated in January 2005 and replaced the outdated and too small Chamonate airfield . The terminal of the comparatively remote airport is of modern architecture and consists of a curved construction made of wood, metal and steel. It therefore lets a lot of daylight into the rather small building, which is 3100 square meters. The building is built without passenger boarding bridges, so you have to climb the planes by stairs. Otherwise, the airport, which is rather sparsely equipped, has a control tower. Other aeronautical buildings such as hangars are not required at the airport and were therefore not built.

The airport's only runway is around 2,200 meters long, making it suitable for aircraft such as the Airbus A319 and A320 or the Boeing 737 . It is also equipped with an instrument runway system. A parking lot with 170 parking spaces was built in front of the terminal.

LAN Airlines , the Chilean flag carrier, is the largest local airline, which (2011) is responsible for more than 60 percent of the passengers and serves the destinations La Serena and Santiago de Chile directly. The Chilean low-cost airline Sky Airline , which covers more than 25 percent of passengers, serves a few domestic destinations. The remaining ten percent fly with the also Chilean Principal (PAL) Airlines, which only flies to Santiago de Chile. This area of scheduled flight represents almost 75 percent of flight movements, the remaining 25 percent is accounted for by general aviation . By far the busiest route from the airport is the route to the capital Santiago de Chile , which is served by all scheduled airlines operating at the airport.

As of 2020, the airport will be served by the three largest Chilean airlines, LATAM , Sky Airline and JetSmart . However, there are only connections to Santiago de Chile.
