The Gjakova Airport is a military airport in Kosovo , by the Italian Air Force is headed.

location

The airport Gjakova located in the immediate vicinity of the Kosovo city of Gjakova ( Serbian : Đakovica ), four kilometers south of the Radoniq Lake (Liqeni i Radoniqit) .

history

Gjakova Airport was built as a purely military airfield and gained great importance in the Kosovo war .

Runway in March 2014

After the Kosovo war, the military airfield was taken over by KFOR and has since been used exclusively for humanitarian and military flights. Since the airport is in the Italian area of responsibility, it was managed by the Italian Air Force , which invested a lot of money in the expansion and modernization of the airport in the years around 2003. They were responsible for maintaining it and operating it until the airport was handed over to the Kosovar government on December 18, 2013.

Plans for use as a commercial airport

The Italian KFOR troops and the Kosovo Ministry of Transport wish to start civil flights in Gjakova. As a commercial airport , Gjakova would compete with Pristina Airport, which is now very busy . In addition, Gjakova Airport would have the advantage that it is not plagued by fog as much in winter as Pristina Airport. Under the current management, however, this is rather unlikely - the project could be more easily realized under civil administration.

In a paper on the expansion of Pristina and Gjakova airports, the Kosovar Ministry of Transport and Communication plans to draw up a master plan for Gjakova airport. In addition, the current runway with a length of 1,800 meters and a width of 30 meters is to be extended to 2,400 meters and widened to 45 meters. So should ICAO standards are met.
