history

The airfield and first facilities had existed west of Tukums since the early 1930s. In the years 1936 to 1938, the airfield was the landmark or destination of the first flights around Latvia . During the Second World War , the facility was expanded by the Red Army . Between 1941 and 1944, the German Air Force built today's airfield in the east of the city. After that, Soviet naval aviators took over the place, which was repeatedly enlarged after the end of the war. After the twin -engined bombers Jak-28L and Jak-28I ( Brewer-B and C ) of the 668th Naval Battle Aviation Regiment (668th MSchAP) of the Baltic Red Banner Fleet, there were 29 Su-24 Fencer front bombers of the 240th Guard Naval Battle Aviation Regiment ( 240th Gw MSchAP) stationed. After their withdrawal by April 1993, the neglected base became the Tukums Alternate Base (RAT) of the Latvian Air Force .

On July 31, 2001, Tukums Airport (ICAO: EVTA) was privatized and transferred to the municipality of Smārde. The Tukums Airport Ltd. was founded on March 15, 2005. She pushed ahead with the renewal of the runway and the construction of the passenger terminal. By 2012, the infrastructure of an airport with an instrument landing system was built.

Between 2012 and 2014 the square was renamed Jūrmala Airport, the construction of the passenger terminal was completed and the certification for commercial operation was completed. In the summer of 2015, after a successful environmental impact assessment , the owner's license for the airport was withdrawn because it was suspected of illegal activities. As a result, the operator and management were replaced. Since March 2017, the airport has had a new strategic investor in the entrepreneur and racing driver Raimonds Kisiels.
