The Mosul airport is located in Mosul in northern Iraq and has a concrete runway.

history

Originally built as a British military base in the 1920s, it became a civilian airport with the construction of a new terminal in 1992.

The airport has been used for civil purposes since 1992.

After renovation work, the airport achieved international standards and category 1. In December 2007 it reopened.

On June 9, 2014, the airport fell into the hands of the Islamic State . The airport has been closed for security reasons since September 21, 2014. On February 23, 2017, Mosul Airport was captured by the Iraqi Armed Forces as a result of the Battle of Mosul .

Incidents

  • On April 17, 1973, an Iraqi Airways Vickers Viscount 735 ( aircraft registration YI-ACL ) made a belly landing at the airport after all of its fuel was used up. All 33 occupants survived the accident; the machine has been irreparably damaged.
  • During the forcible conquest of Kuwait by Iraq in the Second Gulf War , at least ten Kuwait Airways aircraft were stolen by Iraqi occupation forces and brought to Iraq. There were three Airbus A300s , five Airbus A310s and two Boeing 767s . Two Boeing 767s ( 9K-AIB, 9K-AIB ) were flown to Mosul Airport on November 17, 1990, as were the two Airbus A300s 9K-AHF and 9K-AHG later . Between the end of January and the beginning of February 1991, these four aircraft were destroyed here in bombing raids by UN troops.
